LTNI Presents: the James 2:8 Benefit --bet you wish you were there!!

Keynote Speaker Michael Coren blew the socks off his audience with his unedited opinion of religious intolerance in the Middle East, and how Christians are suffering around the world.
Love Thy Neighbour International (LTNI), a not-for-profit human rights organization dedicated to the promotion of religious freedom worldwide and international development projects for religious minority communities in Pakistan held their first annual ‘James 2:8 Benefit’ on Friday, November 30th, 2012 at the Grand Olympia Hospitality and Convention Center in Stoney Creek, Ontario. Through this event, LTNI raised funds towards their latest project to build a Primary School and Health Clinic in Youhanabad, Pakistan. The benefit was very well attended by well over half of the expected 220 guests despite challenging weather conditions and extreme traffic delays spanning across the greater Hamilton and Toronto areas.

LTNI Chair Vincent Samuel presents MP Harold Albrecht and MP David Sweet with some Team LTNI gear and Pakistani sweets!
Special guests who joined Team LTNI that evening included Federal Members of Parliament David Sweet (Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale) and Harold Albrecht (Kitchener-Conestoga); Mark Dotzert, National Councilor of the Conservative Party of Canada; Rt. Honorable Reverend Sir James Thomas and Krystyna Thomas; Dr. Peter and Tracey Marshall of Victory International and Faith International Churches; Pastors Tony and Vicky Schleiffer from Faith FM93.9 Brantford; keynote speaker Michael Coren, author, journalist and host of The Arena on Sun News Network; Wilson Chowdhry, Chairman of the British Pakistani Christian Association; and Cherrie Anderson, Hal St John, and Nico Cox of the British electro-pop band Ooberfuse. Many thanks to Member Parliament Joe Daniel (Don Valley East), although MP Daniel could not make it due to the unfortunate weather we sincerely appreciate his support!

Wilson Chowdhry, BPCA and Ooberfuse awarded ELCSA's by LTNI Chair Vincent Samuel along with MP Albrecht and MP Sweet.
Wilson Chowdhry, BPCA presented a brief summary outlining the situation of Christians in Pakistan and the history surrounding religious intolerance; while Serena Samuel (Media Coordinator, LTNI) discussed the project’s details and how LTNI would create indigenous income sources to support the school and clinic’s sustainability.

LTNI Chair Vincent Samuel chats with Michael Coren and Wilson Chowdhry, BPCA.
Chowdhry commented:
"Pakistani Christians face increasing discrimination and persecution yet any voice of opposition is either killed or assassinated, it is essential that world humanitarians speak out for them.  I was pleased to share our research with Christians in Canada who share our passion for justice for those suffering in the homeland and are challenging for change."

Michael Coren, who is well known for his knowledge and research on international issues specifically surrounding the Middle East, U.S. and Europe; is an avid supporter of religious freedom in Canada and is not one to shy away from speaking the plain truth. He did not disappoint in his speech during the evening. His criticisms of Pakistan’s Blasphemy Laws were echoed throughout the evening by all guests.

The evening also featured an incredible special performance by Ooberfuse featuring Wizard MC, including several songs; specifically ‘Free Asia Bibi’ and ‘Blood Cries Out’ which they wrote in tribute to Pakistan’s former Minister for Minorities Shahbaz Bhatti who was assassinated in March, 2011 for his fervent stand against the Blasphemy Laws and support of Asia Bibi.

Ooberfuse Performs 'FREE ASIA BIBI'. Left to Right: Nico Cox, Wilson Chowdhry (Wizard MC), Cherrie Anderson, Hal St John.
LTNI has created an annual award christened the ELCSA (‘Excellence in Leadership and Community Service Award’) to be presented to individuals, families or groups that have impacted their local/international communities through their service. The ELSCA was revealed at the James 2:8 Benefit and honoured several couples including Dr. Peter and Pastor Tracey Marshall of Victory International and Faith International Churches; Pastors Tony and Vicky Schleiffer from Tabernacle of the Congregation in Waterford, and Faith FM 93.9 Radio in Brantford; Mark and Colleen Dotzert, Mark is National Councilor of the CPC, he and Colleen are both extremely active with local organizations such as LTNI and are also small business owners; Rt. Honourable Reverend Sir James Thomas and Krystyna Thomas, who have both served as missionaries around the world in countries like Croatia, Jamaica, and Mexico. A special edition of ELCSA was also created to honour Wilson Chowdhry of BPCA and Ooberfuse for their dedication, support, and the awareness that they have raised for the issues faced by Christians in Pakistan. Needless to say, every recipient more than deserved the recognition and Team LTNI would like to thank each of them for their work.

The Complicated Sexual Identities of Today's Modern Man

This is definitely not my usual topic of discussion but because quite often Christians lay sheltered in their own happy little worlds and are unaware of what's going on around them I thought I'd introduce you to a highly taboo subject matter --one that I am not fond of myself. This is where the world is right now, this is how people around us are feeling and viewing things --because really that's what the world has become, a lot of feelings and opinions.

The lines were drawn long ago but they have gotten so fuzzy I'm not even sure if I'm awake or asleep (just kidding, I'm definitely awake). My question is, how do we as Christians approach a society that truly and genuinely more than ever before believe that they ARE right and HAVE the right to believe in quite literally anything and everything all the time as true and "ok" as long as someone else tells them it's true and "ok".

--Well almost anything, they're not about to believe the Bible.

It's a hard knock life my friends. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this!

Introducing the James 2:8 Project

Rimsha is Free?

Rimsha's Prison Photo
Pakistan's "Blasphemy Girl" is "free" --quotes all over today, because neither of those statements are entirely true. Rimsha Masih, age undetermined but no doubt a minor --insultingly turned into a woman because she does not fit the Pakistani image of what a girl should be; i.e. stick skinny and super short --not that the children who portray the usual child-like image have been spared from the pedophiles rapists and child-marrying folks in Pakistan.

It literally nauseated me reading some the comments the educated men of Pakistan had to write about this girls "looks". I personally don't care if she's 14 or 40, this entire case was ridiculous and the person who put this family through this life-altering ordeal should have been punished. What am I saying? We're talking about Pakistan here, justice is as irrelevant as truth.

Still I am greatful to God. None but the God of Abraham Isaac and Jacob could have resolved this issue for Rimsha. She is now hidden with her family --and I don't need to know where, the rest of the world should stop asking. She's safe and that's all that matters. As for being free, Rimsha being free in Pakistan is like saying a goldfish in a bowl is free.

Today's report via Shamim Masih reveals that she has been absolved in court..

Islamabad High Court (IHC) dismissed FIR against Rimsha

Islamabad Pakistan (Shamim Masih): The Islamabad High Court (IHC) announced its verdict today on 20th November, 2012 and dismissed the First Investigation Report (FIR) filed against 14 years Rimsha, a Christian girl, accused of committing blasphemy.

According to Rimsha’s lawyer Abdul Hameed Rana, the verdict was announced on an application filed by him seeking quashment of the FIR against Rimsha.

Earlier on November 14, the honorable chief justice IHC, Mr. Iqbal Hameed-ur-Rehman had reserved the judgment and announced it today.

Rimsha, 14 a Christian girl was arrested from the slum settlement of Islamabad on August 16 this year, when her neighbor Malik Hammad, accused her of burning pages of Quran verses. She spent three weeks in the jail and was released on bail on 8 September and flown to unknown place with her family.

Be Blessed,

Adil Shahzeb on Christianity and Human Rights in Pakistan --A.K.A a Lack Of...

If you dare to raise your voice against the hostilities and ill-treatment Christians are enduring, it would either be declared as ‘blasphemous’ or you would be labelled as an agent of the firangi

I have received tremendous feedback for my last article, “Pakistan, the game of religious bigotry” (Daily Times, November 10, 2012), but one email in particular has compelled me to touch on the challenges faced by the Christian community in Pakistan. I had mentioned Christians just once in my last article, but not enough about the biased and highly unfair treatment that they face throughout their lives. In Pakistan’s religious bigotry, the most deprived of all are the Christians, the ‘minority’ that only gets media attention if accused of ‘blasphemy’ or as a Muslim convert. According to the UK-based Centre for Legal Aid Assistance and Settlement, “Christians in Pakistan are illiterate, suffering in extreme poverty and unemployment among Christians has increased to an unprecedented level.” The statistical data indicates that only six percent have primary school education; four percent of Christians have high school education, one percent of Christians have college education, and next to no presence in higher studies and professional education.

I had no idea that my article in Daily Times would take me right back to my childhood to reflect upon the ills of our society. Now that I am writing I am reminded of a classmate, the most bullied child at school, who was not even allowed to sit with the other children or to be precise, no other pupil would prefer to willingly share a desk with him unless as a punishment by the teacher for not doing his homework. He was the only Christian child in the entire school who would stand with his lunch box in a corner of the playground during recess and was never allowed by the other children to play with them. For obvious reasons he failed all of his exams three years in row until he was forced to leave. Back then I never understood how deprived he was, but now I really feel for the mental torture and the traumatised childhood he endured. Of course it does not matter at all in Pakistan what Article Five of the Universal Declaration of Human Right states: “No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.”

It is not only how an underprivileged Christian child is treated at school. When he grows up in our highly radicalised society he is told: the only job that suits you is to clean the streets of Pakistan as that was how your forefathers served this country. And it does not stop there; you also will not have a say in the country’s mainstream affairs including politics; you would hardly be considered for any white-collar job, and last but certainly not the least, all your life your ‘non-Christian’ friends would look down upon you, and you would most probably be the victim of bullying forever. Even though your educational institutions and the broken society would only groom you as the next generation of lowly worker, if you somehow manage to grow up with a good education and competence, most of the jobs that you would opt for would be for non-Christians. However if despite that, you do manage to secure a decent job, you could face a similar hostile work environment that you went through at your school.

So what if Article two of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights clearly states, “Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.” Despite that, if you dare to raise your voice against the hostilities and ill-treatment Christians are enduring, it would either be declared as ‘blasphemous’ or you would be labelled as an agent of the firangi (white Christian). It would also be good to advise your Muslim friends who are brave enough to speak up for your rights that if they get killed for daring to feel your pain, society would not only be scared to condemn their killing but would also hesitate to attend their funeral or even offer Fatiha (customary Islamic prayer).

Even if you are aware of Article eight of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that states, “Everyone has the right to an effective remedy by the competent national tribunals for acts violating the fundamental rights granted him by the constitution or by law”, do not bother knocking at the door of the courts. This would put the life of your lawyer and court judge at risk — that is if you are lucky enough to find a brave lawyer who would take your case.

Section (1) of Article two of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states: “Everyone charged with a penal offence has the right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty according to law in a public trial at which he has had all the guarantees necessary for his defence.” But do not be shocked if from day one you are considered guilty within your society for daring to speak up against those who have deprived you of your fundamental and basic human rights.

The very first Article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states, “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights”, but be aware that you do not deserve dignity because you were never born free but a Christian of a non-Christian radicalised society. More so, if you have come across Article one of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states, “All human beings are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood”, do not be disheartened if you are still treated as a deprived and degraded citizen.

So dear human being, oops sorry, I meant dear Pakistani Christian, keep your head down and carry on living your life with no rights in Pakistan.
